Canada to Set First Ever Cap on Temporary Residents

Canada is implementing limits on temporary residents for the first time, according to Immigration Minister Marc Miller. Starting in September, caps will be reduced over three years, affecting international students, foreign workers, and asylum seekers. This move comes amidst concerns about affordability and housing.

The goal is to lower temporary residents to 5% of the population, down from 6.2%, for sustainable growth. Canada has experienced a significant rise in temporary residents, with 2.5 million in 2024, up from one million in 2021. While the country relies on foreign workers for labor, adjustments are deemed necessary for a more efficient system.
